Quel Talent !

Short film . 2025 . 3 min 22 sec

Directed by Maël Fromentin

Synopsis :

Set in the atmosphere of a 1920s silent film, a naïve young actor encounters a cunning producer. Seduced by flattering promises, he gradually loses both his illusions and his fortune. Inspired by La Fontaine, this cinematic fable revisits with humor and irony the timeless themes of flattery and vanity.

Logbook :

The first pages are torn away, that’s how it is…
The beginning, I keep for myself; it’s my treasure.

Day 5,

Today, for the very first time,
Six men came to my aid.
They cut the few trunks I had left lying here and there
into fine planks of wood.

I set off with no knowledge, no skill.
The challenge is to understand how the old sailors once worked.
I’ve given myself some time to learn,
to study the very structure of their vessels, their codes:
Silent. Black and white. Intertitles. Rhythm and burlesque.
So that the whole may withstand the waves.

When I was a child, every night, a story,
a fable was told to me:
The Crow and the Fox.
Today, I give it a new name: The Actor and the Producer.
As for me, I become the captain of a silent cinema.

We have only our resourcefulness.
We must find the right wood, the right ropes,
those that will make it all
believable.
The six men and I are organised and diligent.
We’ve managed far better than I could have imagined.

As the day came to an end and the work was done,
they left,
leaving me with all these sturdy beams.
I assemble them without delay,
and at last… the hull stands tall.

Reflet Regret

Short film . 2025 . 9 min 40 sec

Directed by Maël Fromentin

Synopsis :

Jean-Baptiste, an aging business executive, learns that he has cancer. Over the course of a single day, he engages in a dialogue with his younger self, reliving a romantic opportunity he never dared to seize. Caught between regret, irreversible choices, and lost time, he confronts what shaped his life—and what might have been.

Logbook :

At dawn, I was alone again.
Another idea on my mind.
One that truly mattered to me.
A lucky star whispered it to me.
“Tomorrow, I will set off!”

A man passing by heard me shout.
He must have thought it foolish.
After all, there was only the hull standing upright.

And then I understood that today,
I had to fill the sails with the wind of an intimate story,
that of a man facing his own reflection (reflet),
a prisoner of his regrets.

Day 6

Not long after,
two young women came to see me.
They had heard of a landlocked sailor building his ship.
The story appealed to them, and they wished to help.

I accepted their offer.
They told me that if I truly wanted to set sail tomorrow,
I would need many more hands.

Someone to watch over the ship’s appearance.
Others to tend to the ropes and the helm.
And even a sailor strong enough to secure the firmest anchor.

They promised to organize everything.

The morning began with the search for the sails,
those great sheets of fabric that would become the heart of the vessel.
Without them, the ship would lack all credibility.
We found them.

Then came the question of their face:
what should our flag look like ?
Sad, joyful, threatening ?
We searched for a long time.

At noon, we returned to the shore.
The deck was already well underway.
I watched everyone working with rare kindness.
Some tests proved conclusive.

I spoke with the one watching over the ship’s appearance.
We spoke of the proud fleets of a distant captain,
whose sails command respect:
Captain Park Chan-wook.

As evening fell,
the day’s work had to be brought together.
Without those two young women,
I could never have gone this far.
They understood me and helped me be understood.

Night fell.
Some had left,
but one sailor remained,
determined to assemble the final elements.
Nearby, another sat on the sand
and let a few notes drift away,
gentle as a calm sea.

The sun rises.
I close these lines
and go to sleep in my cabin.

I will soon set sail.
A conventional sailor would leave at dawn,
but not me.
I will wait until the sun reaches its zenith.
For the sea, I can feel it,
will not be calm.
